SearchGPT: The Disruptor in Search Engines & User Experience? SEO

Media: Lianhe Zaobao

Over the past two years, the way search engines are used has changed significantly, with "Zero Click Search" results becoming mainstream. Zero Click Search refers to users obtaining the information they need directly on the search results page without having to click into any website. The advantage of this method is that it greatly improves search efficiency and reduces the time users spend navigating between web pages. Additionally, Zero Click Search enhances the user experience by providing more direct and accurate answers. However, this also means that SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is becoming more important, not only in terms of content quality (as only the best content will be selected by search engines for display) but also in terms of how technically accessible information is to search engines (for more details, refer to the article from six months ago: Improving Keywords But Still Not Ranking Higher?).

However, people have to adapt to the new SEO rules, OpenAI is launching its latest search tool, SearchGPT, for trial use by some users, undoubtedly bringing new variables to the search market.

What is SearchGPT? What are its benefits? And what impact will it have on existing search services like Google and Perplexity?

Features and Advantages of SearchGPT

SearchGPT is a search engine developed by OpenAI, designed to provide "instant answers" by retrieving information from online resources. Its interface is fast and simple, offering multimodal results, including stock charts, weather images, short videos, etc. Most importantly, SearchGPT cites its sources for every search, offering more direct and comprehensive answers with less noise, compared to users having to click through links in Google or obtain partial information from the search page.

Difference Between SearchGPT and ChatGPT

SearchGPT and ChatGPT are both developed by OpenAI, but their purposes and functions differ. SearchGPT focuses on providing specific GPT model search results, allowing users to quickly find the list of available GPT models on OpenAI's website through the search engine. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is a general-purpose conversational AI designed to answer a wide range of questions and engage in extensive conversations. SearchGPT's response style is professional, clear, and concise, focusing on delivering efficient and relevant search results, while ChatGPT is more conversational and adaptive, capable of providing detailed explanations, engaging in extended dialogue, summarizing, translating, and generating ideas.

Impact of SearchGPT on Existing Search Engines

Google - Following the announcement of SearchGPT, Google's stock price immediately dropped by 2%. This indicates market concerns about the potential threat SearchGPT poses to Google. Google has long dominated the search market (which is also the company's primary revenue source), but the emergence of SearchGPT presents a potentially strong competitor. Google is also improving its AI-driven search features, such as AI Overviews, but these have been criticized for providing inappropriate suggestions (e.g., advising users to put glue on pizza).

Perplexity - A startup focused on AI-powered search, backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and semiconductor giant Nvidia. Similar to Perplexity, SearchGPT offers a chatbot-like interface and cites every source. The user experience between the two is quite similar, but SearchGPT, backed by OpenAI's large language model technology and its partnerships with publishers, may have an advantage in terms of data accuracy and citation transparency.

Potential Impact of SearchGPT

The launch of SearchGPT signifies that the search engine market is about to face new competition. As AI technology continues to develop, general tech commentators believe it will:

1. Provide users with instant, accurate, and more comprehensive information that is easy to digest.

However, the widespread adoption of ChatGPT has not yet seen explosive growth, and SearchGPT, which is still not fully launched, faces the same challenge. It is clearly not easy to change habits developed over the past 20-30 years. Therefore, I believe that only a small number of digitally savvy users worldwide will benefit in the short term.

2. Reduce user reliance on existing search engines (especially Google), affecting Google’s user base, behavior learning, and potentially impacting its financial performance and stock price.

However, this may only be a short-term shock. First, Google has other services like email and maps that are integrated with search functions, and a conversational interface like SearchGPT may not meet the everyday integration needs of the general public. Moreover, there are reports that OpenAI is financially unstable, and other tech companies will continue to develop and improve their businesses. In the medium to long term, it is still too early to say whether Google Search or OpenAI/SearchGPT will prevail. Of course, after Zero Click Search Results, website operators may soon have to adapt to new rules that make their content easier for AI to read and reach their target audience. This could be more challenging for small and medium-sized enterprises.

3. Respect and protect the rights of content creators. OpenAI emphasized its support for publishers with the launch of SearchGPT and provided tools to manage content display, which may alleviate some concerns publishers have about AI-generated content.

This is actually quite important. Over the past decade, various websites, including media and publishers, have invested heavily in SEO content, technology, and advertising to capture users (i.e., the top page or top three search results on Google), and they are already exhausted. Zero Click Search Results have further impacted the traffic to media websites by essentially “giving away” the content to Google. Now, with SearchGPT cooperating with publishers, it could change the rules of the game regarding copyright, traffic, and revenue sharing.

In conclusion, the launch of SearchGPT is undoubtedly a significant advancement of AI technology in the search field. It not only improves search efficiency, comprehensiveness, and readability but also attempts to balance the relationship between AI development and the rights of content creators by emphasizing source citation. As SearchGPT is gradually promoted, the search market will face new challenges and opportunities, and major search engines must continue to innovate to adapt to this change, hopefully benefiting the general public and making daily life more convenient.
