In the past, I’ve written about the widespread application of GenAI, compliance issues, wearable AI gadgets, and challenges in job hunting. Some friends have asked whether, apart from checking websites and newspapers for industry developments, there are any other places to learn and network with the industry. They also worry that many online courses are just scams, wasting time and money.
Indeed, since the launch of ChatGPT, aside from the emergence of many real and fake AI companies, there are also many so-called "experts" offering courses with little substance. Even general tech course providers often don’t offer useful content, making it a waste of time and money. On the other hand, industry activities are quite active, and today I’ll introduce a few active organizations in Singapore for everyone to pay attention to and participate in.
1) Asia AI Association is a nonprofit, regional organization dedicated to promoting AI development across Asia. It is the first and, so far, the only AI-related association under Singapore's Registry of Societies. Its mission is to unite AI enthusiasts, promote responsible AI development and deployment, provide high-quality training and educational resources, and foster networking and business opportunities within the AI community.
The association has over a thousand members across more than twelve countries. Major activities include bi-weekly networking events, seminars, and workshops, some of which have been successfully co-organized with SGInnovate and the Singapore Digital Chamber of Commerce. Apart from the website, you can join their WhatsApp group for discussions and check MeetUp for information on future events.
2) The Generative Beings (TGB) focuses on building a community. It is Singapore’s largest and fastest-growing community of founders, product and technology leaders in the generative AI startup space. TGB is committed to fostering the growth and awareness of the generative AI ecosystem, helping startups and leaders connect, share experiences, offer support, and seek help to collectively shape the regional and global AI ecosystem.
The community organizes monthly events, including thought leadership sessions, masterclasses, networking meetups, panel discussions, and also offers one-on-one mentoring and volunteer projects to promote collaboration and knowledge sharing. TGB has partnered with industry organizations such as NVIDIA, AWS, Google, IMDA/DISG, Hatch, ACE, SGInnovate, Wizly, Glints, and SUPA.
Future events can be found on Luma, and their WhatsApp group has over 1,500 members.
3) Singapore Startup Community
This community, which has been active for over 12 years on the MeetUp platform, boasts a membership of over 4,700 people interested in startups. Members come from various high-tech fields as well as from sectors like biochemistry, ESG, and professional services. It is a community of professionals working in startups, investors in venture capitals, collaborators with startups, and those involved in cross-border business expansion.
They focus on monthly casual mixers in Singapore, where people can connect, network, and participate in startup activities, such as workshops on GenAI-themed t-shirts. They also have a Telegram group to exchange information and build stronger connections. I happen to be one of the co-organizers of these events.
There are many similar organizations out there. The three mentioned above are actively communicating and coordinating with each other, and we hope to collaborate in the future. Together, through nonprofit organizations, we aim to contribute to the popularization of AI and the development of the industry in Singapore and across the Asia-Pacific region. By linking large industry enterprises, startups, investors, SMEs, and chambers of commerce, we can foster more exchange and development.
